On Thursday April 23, 2015 we watched Alphaville by Jean Luc Godard. It was very New Wave and very black & white and very cryptic and very trill.

March 5, 2015 // R-100 // Ben
The tag line this film is: "A mild-mannered family man with a secret taste for S&M finds himself pursued by a gang of ruthless dominatrices"So...yeah. Like I'm not going to pick that.
Afterward, maybe a gang of ruthless dominatrices will pursue Dawson. Although, I think if we're being honest with ourselves, that seems much more like a situation Pacy would find himself in (especially now that Andy's gone).
House Garry @ 7:30. Pizza provided.
BYOW&C (bring your own whips and chains).
Yours in trillness,
bg

February 19, 2015 // Following // Springer
Casa de Springer - 7:30 - Thursday, February 19, 2015 - Pizza, Movie, DC
Please bring: yourselves and beer (and Bjorn, can you bring your laptop, cable and DC)
I have selected Following. It's written and directed by Christopher Nolan. According to IMDB, it was the first movie he directed. I haven't seen it. It's only 68 minutes so (1) if it sucks, we haven't wasted much time, and (2) there should be plenty of time for a DC.

February 12, 2015 // The Virgin Spring // Caroline
The Virgin Spring was mentioned recently by our friends/neighbors, “Dental” and “Mental.” We were explaining to them about movie night, then we got to exchanging different film titles — and this one came up as a must-see-sometime-in-life. It’s a 1960 Swedish film (translation is Jungfrukällan) directed by Ingmar Bergman (who also did classics like The Seventh Seal, etc.). It’s set in medieval Sweden and has lots of undertones of religious/moral scrupulosity. When I read that, it was interesting to me having seen The Seventh Seal (lots of religion there, too). Curious, I went on to read about how Bergman’s father was a Lutheran pastor, so while Bergman himself was not a man of the church, he picked up a ton of iconography and information naturally due to his father’s work. Religion, faith and questioning of faith are very common threads in his works as a result. Anyway, The Virgin Spring is said to be a story of revenge. It was controversial in its release due to explicit content in one particular scene (I have a feeling we’ll know it when we see it).
I’m going into this blind, once again, so we can always turn to Dawson’s if things go south.
See you all this Thursday (February 12)
House Garry, 7:30pm

January 29, 2015 // Knife in the Water // Bjorn
Get ready for some psychological warfare and rivalry aboard a yacht in Roman Polanski's first feature film , 1962's ''Nóż w wodzie'' ("Knife in the Water").
Using a relatively simple plot and a camera that hardly ever takes its eye off the three characters, Polanski manages to create "a disturbing study of fear, humiliation, sexuality, and aggression". Sort of like Dawson's Creek!
So join me and Roman at Casa de Springer at 7pm for a little Polish sexual tension. And pizza!

January 8, 2015 // Inherent Vice // Rory
This is a field trip movie. We will be watching it at Sundance. Special thanks to Springer for purchasing the tix in advance.
Running time is 148 minutes.
From Metacritic:
"Venturing into somewhat more lighthearted territory after the twin critical successes of The Master and There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson adapts Thomas Pynchon’s period detective novel Inherent Vice. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Doc Sportello, a private eye passing his days in Gordita Beach, CA at the end of the psychedelic ’60s. When his ex-girlfriend (Katherine Waterston) comes calling with a story about a plot to kidnap her current billionaire boyfriend (Eric Roberts) and throw him in the nut house, well, Doc can’t keep himself from helping out an old flame. The impressive cast includes Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Michael K. Williams, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell, and Joanna Newsom (who narrates the film). The notoriously camera-shy author is rumored to cameo as well. Early reviews have been good as Anderson once again jumps into a period-specific L.A. story with a huge ensemble cast—a cast on which the Independent Spirit Awards bestowed the Robert Altman Award, a fitting honor considering the legendary director’s influence on Anderson and, specifically, Inherent Vice. (Altman’s Philip Marlowe adaptation The Long Goodbye has been a touchstone for many critics, as has The Big Lebowski.)"Running time is 148 minutes.
