February 5, 2013 // Searching for Sugar Man // Rory

Hey, y'all. I am picking the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man for tomorrow's edition of Trill Movie Night. I keep hearing and reading positive things about it and it has been the most honored documentary so far during awards season. Here is a brief blurb from metacritic.com:

"Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late '60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez."

Ben and Caroline have graciously offered to host as I just moved into a new place and am still unpacking. We'll get started at the usual time - 6:30. Bring your appetite as pizza will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to follow a Movie Night tradition and get your burp on throughout the evening.

  1. Little known fact: I am basically considered the Michael Jackson of Polka in certain remote areas of Greenland thanks to some mp3s I released in the mid-90s.

Slightly better known fact: I'll be there.

  2. Oh man, I was nervous right at first -- but this is good, because it still leaves me free to show Searching for Sugar Daddy (from the Academy Award-winning producer of "Woman On Pole"). I'll be there.

  3. Thanks to C and B for hosting. I'll be there. Any chance there will be any record producers there? I've got something I'd like them to hear maybe while we wait for Dawson's Creek to get started. I'm pretty sure they'll see that I am destined to be the greatest recording artist of my generation. Then, I'll just need one of you to pirate the album and get it to South Africa for me.
